Technically Charcoal is burnt organic material (Wood) and form of dry art medium, which is often used by artists for their versatile properties. The method used to create a drawing is little similar to Soft pastel. Charcoal medium is available in different forms, such as pencil, compresses charcoal, vine charcoal, charcoal powder etc. Fixatives are often used with charcoal drawings to solidify the position to prevent erasing or rubbing off of charcoal dust. Charcoal drawings are a great way to practice sketching and shading. it gives a possibility to create great levels of gradation of tones by merely varying the pressure of fingers and can create varieties of strokes on the surface.
